Helping Students Succeed

Starlynn Youvella
Although she’s miles from her home on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona, Starlynn Youvella, 19, has found a family of teachers and staff at Foothill College. Starlynn came to Foothill last year to complete university transfer requirements and prepare for transfer to San Jose State University. She intends to pursue a career in multimedia technology. The Hopi Tribe provided Starlynn with an $8,000 annual scholarship to attend Foothill College.

“My Foothill teachers are very accessible and understanding. They want their students to succeed. And while I find the Bay Area more crowded, rushed and fast paced than my home on the reservation, Foothill is a beautiful, serene environment that allows me to concentrate on my studies and ultimately, my success.”

The first in her family to attend college, Starlynn takes her Foothill studies very seriously. “I’m the first child in my family to attend college. That’s a big responsibility. My goal is to show my brother, sisters and members of my tribe that they can attend college. My tribe also wants its children to pursue higher education so that we can return to the tribe and give back to our community.”

Shakespeare Live

Study at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival

This spring, Foothill College students can study Shakespeare and experience the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland April 6-8. Under the guidance of Foothill College English Instructor Kurt Gravenhorst, students will attend a pre-trip preparatory seminar, four plays, actors’ talks and on-site
discussions.

Participants will then attend performances of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Wentworth’s Enter the Guardsman, Calderón de la Barca’s Life is a Dream and Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful.

The course fee is $500 and includes transportation by motor coach, play admission, two nights’ lodging at the Stratford Inn, an evening of fine dining and a box lunch on the return trip. An enrollment fee for the three-unit class is also required.

Foothill will also offer three, seven-play trips in July and August.
