Foothill Hosts Second Century Astronomy Lecture

Dr. Vera Rubin
Foothill College is the only community college in the nation selected to host one of the Second Century Astronomy Lectures presented by the American Astronomical Society. This special lecture will feature Dr. Vera Rubin, noted research astronomer at the Carnegie Institution in Washington. On Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m., Rubin will present What’s the Matter in the Universe, a non-technical, illustrated lecture. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

A pioneer in the study of the properties of distant galaxies of stars, Rubin was one of the discoverers of dark matter—a mysterious material that may make up as much as 90 percent of the universe, but whose nature astronomers do not yet understand.

The lecture is part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, founded by Foothill College Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi. The series is co-sponsored by the NASA-Ames Research Center, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the SETI Institute. For information, access www.foothillcollege.org or call (650) 949-7888.
