Innovative Instruction Start Foothill's Informatics Series Now
This fall, Foothill debuts its new informatics course series. Featuring five courses, the curriculum is designed to give you a solid foundation of the discipline and science of information representation, IS infrastructure and knowledge management. Upon successful completion of the 25-unit series, you will earn a career certificate and will be prepared to complete specialty certification. Foothill also offers an Associate in Science Degree in Informatics.
Informatics is the field of processing large amounts of information, such as compiling databases and designing algorithms that may lead to advances in a variety of fields, including biotechnology, medical informatics and business intelligence.
The job market is beginning to turn around and people are finding technology jobs, says Chuck Lindauer, dean of the Foothill Computers, Technology & Information Systems Division. If you want to work in this industry, you must get the required training and specialty certificates nowso youll be prepared to land a technology job.
If youre hesitant to pursue a technology career because youre worried that tech jobs are being outsourced to other countries, you should know that many technology companies that have outsourced products and services are not pleased with the results, Lindauer says. These same companies are returning outsourced jobs back to the U.S. The reason is simple: when companies outsource, they lose the ability to ensure quality and control-two factors that the marketplace demands.
Courses from the series that will be offered this fall include CIS 61A: Informatics (5 units); CIS 62A: Data Warehousing & Data Mining (5 units); and CIS 63A: Systems Analysis & Design (5 units).
