UNIX Troubleshooting FAQ

Connection Questions
I cannot connect to krypton.fhda.edu with my SFTP or SSH tool. Why?

Account Answers
It's easiest to click one our many links to https://orion.fhda.edu. If you are trying to type the address, realize
that orion is a secure web server. Notice the protocol in the address is https, not http.
If you cannot connect via this link, its possible the machine or the network is down.
Try again later.
Re-read the instructions on orion's screen and ensure you are entering the information
accurately and as it is expected.
During the first three weeks of the quarter the accounts database is updated every 2 - 3 days. If you've recently added the class, its likely you will have to wait until the next update. If it has been more than 3 days, contact the UNIX administrator.

Go to the accounts server and re-enter your personal
information. Your original password will be displayed.
If you've followed the procedure and changed your password to something you should remember, then
you will have to contact the UNIX administrator.
This is decided on a case-by-case basis by the UNIX administrator.
Connection Answers
You do not have an account on krypton which acts only as a web server. This question is
covered in depth under the krypton vs losaltos help topic.

The simplistic answer is that you need to type in the correct username and password. This
might be the case if you are connecting for the first time.
The software you are using must be SFTP capable to connect to our systems. If it is, ensure that you selected the SFTP option (not FTP) when you configured the settings to connect to our machines.
If you have connected previously and you simply cannot connect at this moment, consider the possibility that the machine named losaltos.fhda.edu is not currently on-line. If a machine is unavailable you will be hard pressed to connect to it <grin>
