If your goal is to develop in-demand programming skills using state-of-the-art equipment, the Foothill College Computer & Information Systems (CIS) Department offers you four specialty programs:
- Computer Science Program
- Computer Software Development Program
- Database Management Program
- Bioinformatics Program
- Informatics Program
These CIS programs will help you develop marketable employment skills as well as prepare you to undertake advanced studies at the university level. It also serves to provide career enrichment for the working professional.

The Computer Science Program
The Computer Science Program will prepare you to transfer to a four-year university for completion of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. The program provides you with an excellent foundation in computer programming languages, problem solving tools and mathematics through calculus.

The Computer Software Development Program will prepare you to specialize in the development of application software. Software development is one of the major employment fields open to qualified programmers. It is also excellent preparation for advancement in computer systems analysis, design and management.

The Database Management Program
The Database Management Program is designed for the student who wants to upgrade or acquire new vocational skills in the fields of database systems administration, database application design, and programming database management systems. Foothill College is now working in partnership with the Oracle Corporation to assist students in the program to pass the Database Administrator and Database Designer Certification examinations.
You will receive a foundation in business information systems, database theory and design, a procedural programming language and a database language. Specific job opportunities open to graduates of this program include database administration, database application design, and database applications programming.

The Bioinformatics Program
The Bioinformatics Program is a collaboration between the CTIS and BIO/Health Divisions that introduces students to an area of science that incorporates computational approaches to solving biological problems. Coursework includes core classes from each Division and prepares the students for careers as Biotechnology Laboratory Technicians.

The Informatics Program
The Informatics Program is intended for students wishing to upgrade or acquire new vocational skills in the emerging field of information analysis. The program is designed to provide students with skills in applying analysis to information in a specific area of emphasis such as the sciences, business, social sciences and others. Specific areas where the results of informatics analysis are being seen include security (military, airports, etc.), forensics, biology and chemistry, medical technology, database systems, financial analysis, journalism, psychology, and social informatics.
