STEM Summer Camp 2015

The High School STEM Summer Camp at Foothill College is a program for high school students who will be freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors in the Fall of 2015, and the Middle School STEM Summer Camp sessions are for students who will be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the Fall of 2015. We are looking for students who want to strengthen and expand their scientific knowledge and have fun!!! A variety of science and engineering concepts will be introduced through hands-on experiments.

Session Descriptions

Amusement Park Physics

We will start out with lab activities, one introduced the idea of energy conservation and the other centripetal force. Students used kits to build their own roller coasters, first following the directions with the kit and then making their own designs. Throughout the week we used worksheets to determine speeds and forces, using energy conservation and centripetal force.


The students will have hands-on activities on "optics and telescopes", "Light, Color & Spectra", "Sunspots", "Model comets" and a trip to Foothill's Observatory.


Biotechnology is the manipulation of living things, or their parts, to benefit society. This session will focus on skills and technologies utilized in the biotech industry. All activities will hands on with practical applications.

Build an App

Together we will build an application using the latest web technologies like JavaScript and HTML5. Our app will be hosted on the web, which you and your friends can interact with. We will learn how to use D3.js, which is used to design interactive visualizations. Check out examples at

Build a City

Interested in 3D design for architecture, modeling, and printing? In small teams you’ll build a miniature city with 3D buildings you design & print. Start here to learn basic 3D design or take this as a follow on to our 3D Modeling and Printing Class. Bring a hard hat!

Forensic Technology

This 4-day camp will engage the students in documenting a crime scene that involves physical evidence in the form of DNA, blood spatter, trace evidence, firearms, skeletal remains, and fingerprints. Students will process these forms of evidence in the laboratory and present their findings in the form of a mock trial to determine the guilt or innocence of the suspect.


NANO Camp provides a hands-on introduction to nanotechnology with demonstrations and experiments in self-assembly, nanoparticles, building nanocarbon models, preparing thin films, and assembling a small fuel cell. All students will learn to operate a tabletop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscope (SEM).

Light and Color

In this session we'll look at many aspects of light. We'll play with lenses and mirrors, explore color, understand diffraction, learn about atomic spectra and discover how light can tell us about some of the secrets of the universe.

The Chemistry of Cooking

Acid and bases, enzymes and proteins, crystals and gels. Chemical reactions take place everyday in your kitchen. Learn about the science of cooking as we experiment with cookies, root beer, and more in this ultimate “play with your food” session. (Please contact the program administrator regarding any food-related allergies in advance.)

Video Game Design

Students in Video Game Design will be introduced to the fundamentals of game design with the game development engine Unity 3D. Each student will be able to make their own physical protoypes and a complete digital game that they can take home at the end of camp and share with friends and family.

3D Modeling and Printing

Students in the 3D printing session will learn how to transform their ideas into digital models using Autodesk design and engineering software. They will also create a physical model that they can take home using a MakerBot 3D printer. This session is ideal for students interested in creating their own robotics parts, personalized items or figurines.

Middle School Animation

In this camp session students will learn how to bring computer graphics 3D charaters to life. Using techniques employed by animators in major studios students will discover the fundamental priciples of animation and how to apply them in their own creative work. With the guidance of the instructor, students will be able to take home their animations at the end of the week to share with friends and family.
